FINANCE FOR YOUR
FARMING BUSINESS

FINANCE FOR YOUR FARMING BUSINESS
World over, there have been advocate to
finance agriculture, to increase budget
allocated to agriculture especially in
developing economy. Grants, loans and aids
for agriculture has been released by both
government and international community but
the impact are not being felt by real farmers
on the field. I strongly believe Lack of proper
monitoring system is the cause but that’s just
for another day.
So, how do you finance your agribusiness
when it seems cash is difficult to access.
Days of my humble beginnings have been
mired with lack of access to resources to do
farming business. when I discover that all the
money I could gather was not enough, I had to
find a way.
Most of the time, we think until we are able to
access a million dollar from investor before we
start, and you wait and wait until your dream
dies.
I was able to negotiate for 4hectares of free
land from land owners and laborers on a profit
sharing and payment after harvest. This is not
a rocket science, met with land owners, village
heads, chiefs e.t.c, sold my vision, how it will
benefit them, and negotiated a non-financial
win-win deals. They bought the idea and were
happy to deal with me.
Your approach should depend on your
situations and what you want to achieve.
To succeed in negotiating, you need to create
an environment of trust, be trustworthy and
always do what you say.
I have seen smart newbie agropreneur lease
poultry pen for free, got the owner of the pen
to be part of the business at a win-win profit
sharing rate. Just last month, they expanded
the poultry with the reinvested profit.
Why cant you lease a pen and pay when you
have sold your products. Its impossible and
difficult when you sit at home and think
miracle will happen to you. I have used this
strategy over and over
again to get to where I wanted to be. As an
agropreneur, you need to develop this
negotiating skills.
Our Free plantain suckers programme in
Ogbomosho is one of the investment
opportunity for agropreneurs which is like a
subsidy for farmers with little resources. You
can read more for details on the website blog.
Secondly, through Cooperative and
Associations. I have seen many lives changed
by pulling together funds, ideas and resources.
My first profit came from the farm cooperative
me and my friends started back in the days. I
will rather be a small part of bigger thing than
be a big part of nothing. its a good place to
horn your skills and knowledge about farming.
That’s why we started a practical training in
Oyo and Ogun state and participant are
admitted into cooperative to help them groom
their skills and be able to pull their resources
together.
I got calls and email messages everyday from
people asking ‘I am interested in agribusiness,
how do I start?’ The best way to start is to
get practical training to acquire real time
experience and knowledge. Agricbusiness is
more than going to the internet to read and
trying to establish what you have read in real
life; its the surest way of wasting your hard
earned money.
Join international farming organisation and be
active (networking with influencer).I will talk
on that another day. A family friend who is
also into agriculture is in India as I write, was
sponsored by an agriculture international
organisation and that platform has enabled
him to raise over $50,000 from investors.
Join, like and follow farming groups on
facebook, twitter e.t.c to access some of the
information on agriculture scholarship and
sponsorship.

business; add your comment
